How a Cover-Up Tattoo Goes in Mesa, From Consult to Healed
Share
A cover-up at our Mesa shop runs in four stages: a free in-person consult where the artist reads the old ink, a design built around it, one or more sittings with healing time between, and a result that settles over the next few weeks. Here is what happens at each stage and what you do.

Searching for a cover-up tattoo near me usually ends with the same question: what happens once I walk in? At Tagz Tattoo in Mesa, the cover-up tattoos page explains the style. This post just puts the steps in order.
What happens at the first visit?
The first visit is a free consultation, and it is in person. An artist has to see the old tattoo itself, because a photo does not show how dark the ink really sits or how your skin took it. You leave knowing whether it covers as it is, how big the new piece has to be, and what it costs.
Call or text first, so the artist who looks at your old ink is the one who would do the work. If you want help deciding what to show them, our post on bringing old ink to a cover-up consultation covers it.
How is the new design built around the old ink?
A cover-up does not erase anything. The artist uses the old tattoo as part of the map and hides its dark lines inside the shadows of the new design. Where the two overlap, the new work has to be at least as dark as the old, so we cover with heavy black and grey, and the new piece almost always runs bigger than the one it hides.

Will it take more than one sitting?
A big one often will. Packing dense black over existing ink is a lot for skin to take in a day, so a larger cover-up is split across sittings with healing time between them, because push it too far in one go and the ink drops out of the overworked spots. Simple cover-ups can be a single session. The artist gives you the count at the consult, once they have seen the piece.
How does the process fit together?
| Stage | What happens | What you bring or do |
|---|---|---|
| Free consult | The artist reads the old ink in person and sets the direction | The tattoo itself, a few reference images, an open mind on size |
| Booking | A deposit holds your date, or you set up financing | The deposit, or a Check Your Purchasing Power run |
| Sittings | The cover goes in, split across visits when it is large | A valid photo ID, since we tattoo 18 and over only |
| Healing | The piece settles over about two to three weeks | Aftercare, shade from the sun, no pool or lake |
How do you pay for a cover-up?
You get a real number at the consult once the artist sees the old tattoo, since the price depends on its size and how dark it is and on what you want over it. A deposit holds your appointment and comes off the total, so it is not an extra charge. For bigger cover-ups we offer Get Tatted Now, Pay Later, a soft credit pull that does not touch your score to check, and approval means no deposit up front. Our tattoo financing page has the steps, and what a cover-up costs explains what moves the quote.
What does healing look like between sittings?
A good artist plans the darkest areas knowing the work settles over the two or three weeks after, since healed is what counts. This is Mesa, so keep new work out of the sun and stay out of the pool and off the lake until it closes up. Mad Rabbit foam wash, glide, soothing gel and patches are sold at the front counter. Our guide to healing a tattoo in the Mesa heat goes into more detail.
Is a cover-up a fit for a light design?
Usually not over dark ink. Old ink shows through lighter work, so a delicate fine line tattoo or a soft color piece will not hide a bold black band underneath. If you are set on a light design, ask at the consult whether the old tattoo needs lightening first. We do not do laser at the shop, and the artist will tell you plainly if a few laser sessions somewhere else would help the cover. Our post for Gilbert clients on covering or fading first goes through that choice.
