Tagz Tattoo for Scottsdale

Scottsdale already has ink. Old Town Ink on 2nd Street, Dame of the West, Grand Majestic West, Victorum, all of them clustered a few blocks off Scottsdale Road in the same square mile as the galleries and the saloons.

So when somebody from Scottsdale calls us, it is rarely because nothing is closer. It is because they want the sitting to feel like a sitting, not a stop squeezed between the valet and a table at Riot House.

We are Tagz Tattoo, 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, on East Main Street in Mesa. AG owns it. He started it and put the team together, and his lane is black and grey realism, which is what most people drive in for.

He posts the work on TikTok and YouTube at @agtattoos, healed and fresh both. If you are the kind of Scottsdale client who reads three Neiman's reviews before buying a pair of shoes, watch a few of those clips before you book. Look at the healed ones.

A fresh tattoo is swollen and shining and it flatters everybody. What it looks like a year out is what tells you whether the artist can actually do the work.

Getting here from Scottsdale

From South Scottsdale, the 85257 end that runs straight into Tempe, you drop onto Loop 202 at McKellips and you are at our door in about twenty minutes. Twelve miles give or take.

From Old Town, McCormick Ranch, or the gated north end up by DC Ranch and Grayhawk it is a longer pull down Scottsdale Road or the 101. But for most of those folks a run over to Kierland or a night in Old Town is already a deliberate outing, so Mesa is not a stretch.

Parking here is free and the door faces Main. No garage ticket, no six-block walk from wherever you finally found a spot on a Saturday when the bachelorette crowd has taken over the blocks between Camelback and Miller.

Mesa's downtown, west along Main from us, is its own thing. The Mesa Arts Center anchors Main, the light rail stops at Center and Main, and the street leans into tattoo culture with Pop-Up Tattoo Parlor nights and the Dia de los Muertos festival. It is grittier than the Marshall Way ArtWalk, and a lot of our Scottsdale regulars end up liking that.

One building, several rooms, a barber in the back

There is a barber working in the same building. Get a piece, get a fresh cut, same visit. That is the one stop shop line you will see in the reviews.

The space is big, several rooms, and one of them we call The Big Room. A long sitting is not crammed into a corner while three other machines run next to your ear. If you are coming off the north end where you are used to space and quiet, that matters more than people expect.

The lineup rotates month to month. AG is the constant, always here. Over time you will see Eddy, Cam, Alex, Steve, Priscilla, Tanner, Carlos, Presley come through.

Black and grey realism is the core of the shop, but there is color, fine line, and traditional in the building too. Nobody blinks at a full sleeve, a chest, a back, or a leg.

Because the roster moves, call first and ask who is booking your style. If you want fine line script and the fine line artist is booked out three weeks, better to know before you drive.

How a big piece actually goes

  1. Free consult. Sit with the artist who would do the work, not a front desk. Bring references or just the idea, and talk size, placement, and style.
  2. Stencil. The artist draws it up and pulls a stencil. You check the flow in the mirror and move it until it sits right, before anything goes in.
  3. Linework. The first session maps the outline so the piece reads as one thing instead of a stack of separate tattoos crowded together.
  4. Shading and saturation. Later sittings build the depth in passes, with healing time between, so the skin takes each pass clean.
  • Free consultationSit with the artist who would do the work. You pay nothing at the consultation.
  • Same-day walk-insWhen a chair is open, walk in off East Main and get started that day.
  • Get Tatted NOW, Pay LATERFinancing on bigger work. It is a soft pull, so it does not touch your credit score.

The reason it takes several sittings is skin. It only takes so much ink in one go. Push past that and it heals rough, ink drops out, and you are booking a touch-up you should not have needed.

Where it sits on the body changes how the session feels. Over bone and thin skin, ribs, inner arm, the elbow ditch, hands, back of the knee, the needle bites harder. Fleshier spots ride easier.

If it is your first tattoo, say so. First-timers and cover-ups are normal here, single needle up to full sleeve, and a good artist will talk you through where to start.

A thing the reviews keep hitting: people walk in nervous and stop being nervous once they are in the chair. Clean shop, straight answers, professional the whole way through. The Google reviews back that up.

Price, deposits, and financing

Price depends on the piece and who does it, so call and ask for a real number. Consults do not cost anything, so you hear the figure before you are on the hook for it. A deposit holds your appointment and comes off the total, it is not an extra charge.

For the bigger work we run Get Tatted NOW, Pay LATER. It is a soft credit pull, so it does not touch your score.

You pay monthly or every couple of weeks, and once you are approved there is no deposit. Full sleeves and back pieces are where most people use it.

Aftercare and Mesa heat

Fresh ink and an Arizona summer do not mix well if you are careless. Mesa runs past 110, and Scottsdale is no cooler. Keep a new piece out of direct sun and out of the pool while it settles, which for you probably means skipping the resort deck and the Camelback hike for a stretch.

The barber and the AC on your way out are the easy part. The two weeks after are on you.

Bring the idea, get a real number

Consults are free, so you hear the figure and the plan before you are on the hook for anything. Same-day walk-ins when a chair is open.

Tattoo shop near Scottsdale FAQ

Do you do piercings?
No. Tagz is a tattoo-only studio, so we don't do piercings of any kind. For piercings you'll want a dedicated piercing studio.
Do I have to be 18 to get tattooed at Tagz?
Yes. You must be 18 or older with a valid photo ID. We don't tattoo anyone under 18, even with a parent's consent.
How far is Tagz from Scottsdale?
From South Scottsdale it is about twelve miles and twenty minutes, mostly on Loop 202 from the McKellips interchange. From Old Town or the north end near Troon and Desert Mountain it is longer, but it is a straight shot down Scottsdale Road or the 101.
Why come to Mesa when Scottsdale has its own shops?
Plenty of people don't, and that is fine. The ones who make the drive usually want AG's black and grey realism specifically, or they want free parking and a quieter, roomier sitting instead of fighting Old Town on a weekend. Watch @agtattoos and decide for yourself.
Can I get a big piece done in one visit if I am driving in from Scottsdale?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who says yes. Skin only takes so much ink per session. A sleeve or back piece runs across several sittings with healing time between, starting with linework and building up shading from there.
Do I need an appointment coming from Scottsdale, or can I walk in?
Same-day walk-ins when a chair is open. For a cover-up or a custom idea, come in for a free consult and we talk placement first. If you want a specific artist or style, call ahead, since the roster changes month to month.
What does a tattoo cost for a client coming from Scottsdale?
It depends on the design and the artist, so call for a real number. Consults are free. For larger work there is Get Tatted NOW, Pay LATER, a soft-pull financing option that does not hit your credit.

Couldn’t say enough good things about this shop. From the environment to the artist, this shop is great. My artist was Eddy and he gave me a tattoo I’ve been waiting to get cause I needed the right person and the right Shop to do it since this piece was very important to me. It came out perfect. Couldn’t ask for a better experience.

This shop is top notch and full of amazing Artists and you will not be disappointed! ! Yesterday was my 3rd Session with Pricilla to finish my three quarter outdoor arm sleeve. This project a year and half ago and all I had was an idea in my mind and she put it to skin!

★★★★★
Best tattoo shop in AZ ! The quality, style and art work is immaculate! I had the pleasure of meeting AG (owner) and his style of work is magnificent. All the artist in shop have their own style so if you looking for talent, go to TAGZ TATTOO. I also noticed AG has a barbershop on the opposite side of the building and the haircuts are very professional and stylish. I would say this tattoo/Barbershop is A1! I highly recommend getting a tattoo from AG or any of the artists in house. Be a part of the family and join AGs movements.

Finding the shop in Mesa, and what we work with

Tagz Tattoo Shop is at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, Mesa, AZ 85213, in Maricopa County, on the East Main corridor between Lindsay Road and Val Vista Drive.

  • Aftercare we actually stock. Mad Rabbit foam wash, glide, soothing gel and patches are sold at the front counter, so you can walk out with the same aftercare your artist tells you to use.
  • Shop Pay. The Get Tatted Now, Pay Later plans run on Shop Pay at checkout, which is why the payment split happens on the product page rather than through a separate lender in the shop.
  • Arizona age law. A.R.S. §13-3721 is the statute that governs tattooing anyone under eighteen in this state. Tagz goes further than the statute does: eighteen and over with a valid photo ID, no exceptions.
  • Valley Metro. Route and station times for the Main Street line are on the Valley Metro maps and schedules page if you are planning the trip in from Tempe or west Mesa.
