How a sleeve gets mapped

A sleeve is planned as one piece first, then built in four stages across separate sittings.

1. Free consult. Sit with the artist who would do the work, not a front desk. Bring references or just the idea, and talk size, placement, and style.
2. Stencil. The artist draws it up and pulls a stencil. You check the flow in the mirror and move it until it sits right, before anything goes in.
3. Linework. The first session maps the outline so the piece reads as one thing instead of a stack of separate tattoos crowded together.
4. Shading and saturation. Later sittings build the depth in passes, with healing time between, so the skin takes each pass clean.

The first session is usually linework, laying the outline down so the whole thing connects wrist to shoulder and holds together as one piece. That is the session that decides whether the sleeve looks like a sleeve or a pile of separate tattoos crowded onto an arm.

After the outline is set, the later sittings are shading and saturation. That is where the depth in black and grey work comes from.

Why it takes multiple sittings

Skin only takes so much in a day. Push a session too long and the skin gives out, the work heals rough, and ink drops out of the spots that got overworked. You end up going back for touch-ups on a piece that should have been right the first time.

So a sleeve gets broken into sittings, and there is healing time between each one. A big arm is weeks of work spread over months, not a weekend.

What actually counts is how the tattoo looks once it has healed, not how it looks the day you walk out. Fresh work is swollen and shiny and everything looks crisp because your arm is still reacting to the needle. Two, three weeks later, once it settles, that is the real thing.

Pain by placement

People ask what a sleeve feels like, and the honest answer is it depends where on the arm you are. Over bone and thin skin is sharper. The elbow ditch, the inner arm, the wrist, and the elbow itself are the spots people flinch at.

The fleshier parts, the outer forearm and the meat of the upper arm, are easier to sit through. A full sleeve is a lot to sit for, and nobody sails through it, but it is not one steady level of pain the whole way.

It moves as the artist moves. Eat before you come in, and plan on breaks during a long sitting.

Healing between sessions, Mesa summer version

A fresh piece needs to settle before you beat on it, and Mesa makes that its own thing. Summers run past 110 here. Keep new work out of direct sun while it heals, because the sun will fade fresh ink and burn skin that is already raw.

Stay out of the pool and off the lake until it is closed up, no soaking a healing tattoo. That matters more on the East Valley calendar than most places, because half the year the default plan is sun and water. Follow the aftercare your artist gives you between sittings, and the next session goes onto skin that is ready.

When you start it matters as much as where

Here is the part people do not price in. A sleeve is not one healing window, it is five or six of them strung out across months. Every sitting restarts the clock, and the arm is the hardest limb on you to keep out of the sun. A back piece hides under a shirt in July. A forearm does not, not unless you plan on long sleeves through a Phoenix-metro summer. So think about when you start. Begin a full arm in May and most of your healing lands in the worst of the year. Start it in the fall and it heals through the easiest stretch we get.

Choosing your artist

AG owns Tagz. He built it, put the team together, and his lane is black and grey realism, which is what most people come here for. The rest of the roster changes month to month.

Over time you will see Eddy, Cam, Alex, Steve, Priscilla, Tanner, Carlos, Presley come through, and the styles cover color, fine line, and traditional alongside the realism. AG is the one who is always here. Everyone else, call first and see who is booking, especially if your sleeve has a specific look in mind.

Pick the artist by the style you want on your arm for the next forty years. Black and grey realism, color, fine line, traditional, they are different skills, and a whole arm is a lot of skin to hand to someone who does not work in your style. Watch their healed work, then come sit down.

First-timers and cover-ups are both fine here, single needle up to a full sleeve. There is also a barber in the same building, so a lot of guys get a session and a fresh cut in the same visit. It is a big shop, several rooms, one we call The Big Room, so a long sitting is not crammed into a corner.

Paying for a sleeve

Price depends on the piece and who does it, so call and ask for a real number. Consults do not cost anything. A deposit holds your appointment and comes off the total, it is not extra.

Pay it monthly or every couple of weeks, and once you are approved there is no deposit. A big arm adds up over the months, and spreading it out is what keeps people booking the next session instead of putting the arm on hold halfway through.
