Lettering and script sit on the walk-in side of our board. Most of it finishes in one sitting, which is why you can come in on a Tuesday afternoon with a name on your phone and leave with it on your arm. We are at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, on the East Main corridor a few minutes east of the Mesa Temple, and people drive in for it from Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale and Apache Junction.

Why lettering needs air between the strokes

Ink spreads slightly in skin over the years. That is not a flaw in the work, it is what skin does, and every artist who has been at this a while builds for it. On a bold design nobody notices. On lettering it is the whole game, because the gaps inside an e or an a are what let your eye read the letter at all.

Close those gaps up and five years from now you are looking at a dark smudge in the shape of a word. That is the failure mode, and it is avoidable.

Fine-line script that looks clean on a phone screen turns to mush at two inches wide on a wrist. The fix is not a better artist, it is more size and more air between the strokes, and you should hear that at the consult rather than at the touch-up.

So the honest answer on a lot of lettering requests is bigger than what people walk in wanting. A quote that comes with a straight explanation of why is worth more than one that just says yes.

Bring the spelling written down

This sounds obvious until you are in the chair. Names, dates, foreign-language lines and anything with an accent or a character set that is not English all need to arrive written out, exactly as you want it, on paper or on your phone where the artist can read it letter by letter.

Your artist will read it back to you before any needle touches skin, and you will read it too. A tattoo does not have a spellcheck and a stencil is the last cheap moment to catch a problem.

One more thing worth knowing up front

Dark, heavy lettering is on the harder end of what a cover-up can hide later. That is not a reason to avoid it, plenty of people want exactly that and love it for life. It is a reason to be sure about the words before you commit, because a name in heavy black is one of the few things that can need laser lightening first if you ever change your mind. How the sitting goes

1. Font and layout first. Your artist sets the lettering to the placement, sizing it so the strokes have room and the line sits with the shape of the limb instead of fighting it.
2. Stencil, then read it back. The stencil goes on and you both read the words. This is the moment to change your mind about a comma, a date, or the whole thing.
3. Linework in one pass where it can be. Most lettering is a single-sitting job, which is why it is on our walk-in list.
4. Fresh looks heavier than healed. Right off the needle the strokes look thicker and the skin around them is raised. That settles over the next couple of weeks.

What to bring

• The exact wordsWritten out, spelled the way you want them, on paper or your phone.
• A font referenceAnything you have seen and liked, ideally tattooed rather than a screenshot of a screen font.

Healing thin strokes in a Mesa summer

Lettering heals under a thin scab, and thin is the operative word. Do not pick it and do not scratch it. A flake pulled off early can lift a section of a stroke clean out, and on lettering that means redrawing part of a word rather than dropping a dot of ink back in.

Then there is the desert. Summers here push past 110 and fresh ink hates the sun. Keep new work out of direct sun while it closes up, and stay out of the pool and off the lake until it is fully healed. Chlorine and standing water are not friends of an open tattoo.

Lettering is walk-in friendly, so you can come in during shop hours and see who has a chair. We are open Sunday noon to 6, Monday through Thursday noon to 8, and Friday and Saturday noon to 10. If you want a specific artist, call ahead and ask for them by name so you are not making the drive on a day they are not in.
