Tagz Tattoo is a custom tattoo shop in Mesa, sitting on the same street Apache Junction is named after. We are at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, and East Main runs east out of Mesa until it ends at Sossaman Road, where the Apache Trail picks up and carries on into Apache Junction.

Getting to the shop from Apache Junction

Two ways in, and both are dull in a good way. The Apache Trail becomes East Main at Sossaman Road, and from there it is one road west. You pass Val Vista Drive, then Lindsay Road, and we are a short block past it. The door faces Main and parking is out front, so nobody circles the block.

If you would rather not sit at lights, take US 60 instead. The Superstition Freeway runs from Apache Junction straight through Mesa, and you drop off it and come north to Main.

US 60 is the road Apache Junction was built around. The freeway section of it ends right there in town, which is why the drive west feels like it starts the moment you get on.

People make longer trips than this one. A 2026 Google review from Sander A. reads, "I drove an hour to get here and I would do it again without hesitation." From Apache Junction you are nowhere near an hour.

What Apache Junction brings through the door

Apache Junction had 38,499 people at the 2020 census, spread across Pinal and Maricopa counties with most of them on the Pinal side. The town incorporated in 1978, and before that it went by Youngberg. The name it has now comes from the junction of the Apache Trail and the Old West Highway.

That history shows up in what people ask for. Superstition Mountain sits east of town, the Lost Dutchman story is attached to it, and Goldfield Ghost Town and the Superstition Mountain Museum are both out that way. Desert and mining imagery is a regular request, and it happens to be a good fit for high-contrast black and grey, which is the shop's core.

The other thing Apache Junction brings is heat. The town's record high is 119°F, hit on June 26, 1990 and again on July 27 and 28 in 1995. That is not trivia when you have a fresh tattoo.

What the heat actually does to fresh work

1. Direct sun on healing skin. A new tattoo has no defence for the first couple of weeks. Sun on it while it is still settling fades the piece before it has even healed. Cover it or stay out of it.
2. Pools and the Salt River. Submerging a fresh tattoo is the fastest way to lose ink and pick up trouble. Give it the two weeks. If your summer plans involve water, book around them.
3. Sweat under a wrap. Working outside in an Apache Junction August means a piece stays damp. Change the wrap more often than the leaflet says.
4. Dry air. The valley pulls moisture out of everything. Healing skin here needs more attention than the same tattoo would need somewhere humid.

Winter is the easy season for a big piece out here. If you have been putting off a sleeve, the months when it is not 110 outside are the ones to book.

Who does the work

AG owns the shop and put the crew together. His lane is high-contrast black and grey realism, and sleeves and chest pieces are what he spends most of his time on. Large-scale work goes through his own calendar rather than the general book.

The roster moves month to month, so the honest answer on anyone else is to call and ask who is in and what they are booking. We would rather tell you that than put a stale list on a webpage.

It is a big shop, several rooms, one of them we just call The Big Room. That matters more than it sounds for a back or a leg, because you can actually stretch out for a long sitting.

Money, and how people make it work

There is no fixed price menu here and there is not going to be one. Every piece is quoted after somebody has seen the reference, the placement and the size, because those are the three things that decide the number.

What we can tell you before that conversation: the shop minimum is $150, hourly work starts around $125, and a large cover-up starts at $1,400.

Deposits run from $100 up to $1,000 depending on how much of an artist's day you are booking. A deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable, and it comes off the total rather than sitting on top of it. Booking a block of somebody's day takes that time off the market, and a no-show costs the artist real income on drawing that is already done.
