Getting to Tagz from Chandler

Chandler runs on the Price Road corridor. Intel out on the Ocotillo campus, PayPal, Wells Fargo, Northrop Grumman, tens of thousands of people working the campuses off Price Rd. A lot of engineers, a lot of younger money, and plenty of them want ink.

We are up in Mesa, not Chandler, but the drive is short. Take the Loop 101 Price north to the US-60 east, or run the Loop 202 Santan east to Gilbert Road if you are coming from the Ocotillo end, and you are on East Main in about twenty minutes from north Chandler, closer to thirty from the Ocotillo end.

The address is 2735 E Main St, Suite 9. We sit on East Main Street, east of where the light rail line ends at Gilbert Road, in Mesa's old antique and vintage stretch.

East Valley is car country, so people drive in from Ocotillo, Fulton Ranch, Sun Groves, Downtown Chandler, all of it. Parking is easy and the door faces Main.

Chandler is a planned town and everybody knows the tiers. Ocotillo and Fulton Ranch are the lake and golf money, engineers a few minutes from the Intel fabs. Sun Groves and Clemente Ranch are the family blocks inside the good CUSD boundaries.

West Chandler is the commuter side out by the I-10. And Downtown Chandler, around Dr. A.J.

Chandler Park and the old San Marcos, has turned into a walkable run of local restaurants and breweries: The Perch with the rescue parrots, Craft 64, The Brickyard, Hidden House, DC Steakhouse. Chandler goes out at night, and a fresh piece rides right along with that.

Who runs it

AG owns Tagz. He started it and put the crew together. His lane is black and grey realism, and that is what most people come in for.

He posts the work on TikTok and YouTube at @agtattoos, healed and fresh both. Watch a little before you book so you know the hand you are getting.

There is a barber in the same building. Get a piece and get a fresh cut on the same visit. That is the "one stop shop" line in the reviews.

It is a big space too, several rooms, one we call The Big Room. A long back or sleeve session is not jammed into a corner.

The lineup moves month to month. AG is the constant. Everyone else, call first and see who is booking, especially if you are set on a style.

Most of the work is black and grey realism. There is color, fine line and traditional in the building too.

Over the months you might sit with Eddy, Cam, Alex, Steve, Priscilla, Tanner, Carlos or Presley. Nobody here blinks at a full sleeve, a chest, a back or a leg.

Planning a bigger piece

  1. Free consult. Sit with the artist who would do the work, not a front desk. Bring references or just the idea, and talk size, placement, and style.
  2. Stencil. The artist draws it up and pulls a stencil. You check the flow in the mirror and move it until it sits right, before anything goes in.
  3. Linework. The first session maps the outline so the piece reads as one thing instead of a stack of separate tattoos crowded together.
  4. Shading and saturation. Later sittings build the depth in passes, with healing time between, so the skin takes each pass clean.
  • Free consultationSit with the artist who would do the work. You pay nothing at the consultation.
  • Same-day walk-insWhen a chair is open, walk in off East Main and get started that day.
  • Get Tatted NOW, Pay LATERFinancing on bigger work. It is a soft pull, so it does not touch your credit score.

The first session is usually linework, getting the flow down so the arm reads as one piece and not a bunch of separate tattoos crowded together. After that come the shading and saturation passes. It runs across a few sittings, and that is on purpose.

Skin only takes so much in one go. Push past that and it heals rough and the ink drops out in spots. What you care about is how it looks healed, not the swollen version you walk out with the day of.

Placement changes the day too. Over bone and thin skin runs sharper: ribs, inner arm, the elbow ditch, hands, back of the knee.

Fleshier spots ride easier. If it is your first tattoo, say so, and we start somewhere sane.

After you leave

Mesa summers push past 110 and Chandler is no cooler. Keep a fresh piece out of direct sun while it settles, and stay out of the pool, the lakes out in Ocotillo and Fulton Ranch included, until it heals. Bake a new tattoo in the sun or soak it in a pool and you will pull ink and wreck a good piece.

Picking your artist

Start with AG's @agtattoos to see the black and grey realism up close. Since the roster rotates, call and ask who is booking your style, whether that is color, fine line, traditional or a cover-up. We handle everything from a single needle line to a full sleeve, and everybody from a first-timer to somebody closing out a back piece.

Money, deposits and walk-ins

Price depends on the piece and who does it, so call and ask for a real number. Consults do not cost anything. A deposit holds your appointment and comes off the total.

For the bigger work we run Get Tatted NOW, Pay LATER. It is a soft pull, so it will not touch your score, and you pay it monthly or every couple weeks. Approved means no deposit.

Same-day walk-ins when a chair is open. Hours are Sunday noon to 6, Monday through Thursday noon to 8, and Friday and Saturday noon to 10.

We do private events too.

Bring the idea, get a real number

Consults are free, so you hear the figure and the plan before you are on the hook for anything. Same-day walk-ins when a chair is open.

Yes. You must be 18 or older with a valid photo ID. We don't tattoo anyone under 18, even with a parent's consent.
How far is it from Chandler?
About twenty minutes from north Chandler, closer to thirty from the Ocotillo end. Loop 101 Price up to the US-60 east, or the Loop 202 Santan east to Gilbert Road from the south end, and you are on East Main in Mesa. Parking is easy and the door is on Main.
Do I need an appointment coming from Chandler, or can I walk in?
Both. We take same-day walk-ins when a chair is open, and you can book ahead. For a cover-up or a custom idea, a free consult first is the smart move so we can talk placement and size before you commit.

AG is always here and does the black and grey realism. The rest of the roster rotates month to month, so call ahead to see who is booking your style before you drive up.

Couldn’t say enough good things about this shop. From the environment to the artist, this shop is great. My artist was Eddy and he gave me a tattoo I’ve been waiting to get cause I needed the right person and the right Shop to do it since this piece was very important to me. It came out perfect. Couldn’t ask for a better experience.

Best tattoo shop in AZ ! The quality, style and art work is immaculate! I had the pleasure of meeting AG (owner) and his style of work is magnificent. All the artist in shop have their own style so if you looking for talent, go to TAGZ TATTOO. I also noticed AG has a barbershop on the opposite side of the building and the haircuts are very professional and stylish. I would say this tattoo/Barbershop is A1! I highly recommend getting a tattoo from AG or any of the artists in house. Be a part of the family and join AGs movements.

Finding the shop in Mesa, and what we work with

Tagz Tattoo Shop is at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, Mesa, AZ 85213, in Maricopa County. The suite sits on the East Main corridor a short block west of Lindsay Road, with Val Vista Drive about a mile further east. The door faces Main and parking is out front.

If you are not driving, the Valley Metro light rail runs the length of Main Street and ends at the Gilbert Road station, roughly nine tenths of a mile west of the door, so the last stretch is a short ride or walk east along Main.

  • Aftercare we actually stock. Mad Rabbit foam wash, glide, soothing gel and patches are sold at the front counter, so you can walk out with the same aftercare your artist tells you to use.
  • Shop Pay. The Get Tatted Now, Pay Later plans run on Shop Pay at checkout, which is why the payment split happens on the product page rather than through a separate lender in the shop.
  • Arizona age law. A.R.S. §13-3721 is the statute that governs tattooing anyone under eighteen in this state. Tagz goes further than the statute does: eighteen and over with a valid photo ID, no exceptions.
  • Valley Metro. Route and station times for the Main Street line are on the Valley Metro maps and schedules page if you are planning the trip in from Tempe or west Mesa.
