Black and Grey Realism Tattoos Near Chandler: Planning Your Sessions

A black and grey realism tattoo is rarely a one-trip job, and from Chandler every session is a drive. Here is how we plan realism work at our Mesa shop so the sittings fit your schedule.

Black and grey realism is what most people find Tagz Tattoo for. Our owner leads the realism work, mostly high-contrast sleeves and chest pieces, the kind of large composition that has to be planned across more than one session. If you're driving up from Chandler for a piece like that, it helps to know how the sittings break down before you put a deposit down.

The realism tattoo artist page covers who does realism in the shop. This post is about planning the sessions.

One sitting or several?

A single realism piece, say a skull on a calf or a small portrait, is often one session. Sleeves and chest work are not. They get split into a linework pass that maps the flow and then shading passes that build the depth, and the skin needs a couple of weeks to heal between sittings.

In practice a big project becomes a series of half-day or full-day blocks spread over weeks or months, at whatever pace your schedule and budget allow. At the free consult the artist looks at your reference and your arm and tells you roughly how many sittings the piece wants.

Why the shading takes the time

Smooth grey wash gets built in layers, which is why high-detail realism takes far more chair time than a bold design at the same size. Grey wash that went in rushed or too shallow turns blotchy by the second summer out here. When you look at portfolios, ask to see pieces that are at least six months old, because day-one photos hide that completely.

Check depth in your subject too. An artist can be strong on animals and average on faces. For a portrait, bring the sharpest photo that exists. The tattoo can only be as good as the reference, and our post on memorial portrait tattoos covers choosing one.

Making a long sitting work from Chandler

A full-day realism session takes the whole day, so plan it that way. Eat a real meal before you leave, wear something that leaves the placement easy to reach, and keep the evening free. Nobody sits well at hour nine of a workday.

The drive itself is short. We're about 8.7 miles from Chandler's center in a straight line. From downtown, Arizona Avenue turns into Country Club Drive at the Western Canal and runs up to the US 60, then you go east to Gilbert Road and north to East Main. From the south end, Lindsay Road runs north out of Chandler and brings you almost to our door. Chandler has no light rail station, so most people drive, and parking is out front. The tattoo shop near Chandler page has more routes.

The Big Room at Tagz Tattoo in Mesa
The Big Room, where most sessions run.

Most sessions run in the Big Room, where the stations sit in the open. There's also a private room for placements where you'd rather have the door closed. Ask for it when you book.

After each session, on the way home

The National Weather Service puts the normal July high at Phoenix Sky Harbor at 106.5°F (1991 to 2020 normals). Keep a fresh piece covered and out of direct sun on the drive back, and stay out of pools and the lakes in Ocotillo and Fulton Ranch until it has healed. Show up to the next sitting healed as well, since sunburned or broken-out skin can push a session back.

Paying for a multi-session piece

Our shop minimum is $150 and hourly work starts at $125. A realism project is quoted for the whole piece at the consult. A deposit holds your date with the artist and comes off the final cost. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable, so give the shop as much notice as you can if you need to move a date. Financing runs through Get Tatted Now, Pay Later on Shop Pay, with a soft pull that doesn't touch your credit score.

Hours are Sunday noon to 6, Monday through Thursday noon to 8, and Friday and Saturday noon to 10. We tattoo 18 and over only, with a valid photo ID.

Questions to bring to the consult

  • How many sittings will this piece take, and how long is each one?
  • Can I see healed work in this subject, not just fresh photos?
  • Is the reference sharp enough for the size we picked?
  • How far apart should the sessions be?

See more of the work on our black and grey realism gallery page, or read about sleeve tattoos if your piece is headed that way.
