Who does realism at Tagz Tattoo Shop

Realism is the reason most people find this shop. Four artists work in it day to day, and they do not all take the same kind of piece, so it helps to know who does what before you book.

AG, owner and lead realism artist

AG owns the shop and still tattoos most days. High-contrast black and grey is his thing: sleeves, chest pieces, and the kind of large composition that needs planning across more than one session.

You can watch his pieces heal over months on TikTok and YouTube at @agtattoos, and his Instagram is @agtattoos495. He also runs the barbershop on the opposite side of the suite, which is why some clients book a cut and a session on the same trip.

"Sick tattoo shop! AG is the man! Im 54 and haven't had a tattoo in years. Ive always wanted a full sleeve but couldn't ever find the right guy. AG "the owner " did an amazing job and did everything i wanted." Chris Colvin, Google review

Tanner, black and grey

Tanner works the same black and grey lane. His client gallery sits on our black and grey realism page, and every piece in it was done in these chairs on East Main. Look through it before you book so you know his hand.

Carlos, apprentice

Carlos is the shop apprentice, training in black and grey under AG. His work also hangs on the realism gallery page, labeled as his. Apprentice pricing gets sorted at the consult, so ask.

Spence, portraits

Portrait work has the least room for error of anything on this page, and Spence is the one who takes it on. He quotes portraits per piece, and hourly sessions with him start at $125. Bring the sharpest photo of the face that exists, because the tattoo can only be as good as the reference.

How do you vet a realism artist before you book?

Ask to see pieces that are at least six months old. Grey wash that went in rushed or too shallow turns blotchy by the second summer out here, and day-one portfolio photos hide that completely. It is half the reason AG keeps posting healed pieces on @agtattoos.

Then check depth in your specific subject. An artist can be strong on animals and average on faces. If you want a portrait, count the portraits in their book, not the total page count.

Last thing, sit a consult before any money moves. Ours cost nothing. Bring your references, hear how the artist would build it, then decide.

What realism work costs with our artists

The numbers below are the shop's standing session rates. Your piece gets an exact quote at the consult, and your deposit is applied to that final price.

Where the work happens

The shop sits on East Main just past Lindsay Rd, in Suite 9 of the strip at 2735 E Main St. Most sessions run in the Big Room, where the stations sit in the open and you can watch other artists work while you sit. There is also a private room for placements or clients that want the door closed.

Long realism sessions eat a whole day, so plan like it. Eat a real meal first and wear something that leaves the placement reachable. Keep the evening free too. Nobody does their best sitting at hour nine of a workday.

Booking a session with a specific artist

  1. Pick your artist from healed work. The gallery pages and @agtattoos show whose hand fits your piece, and the books in the shop go deeper.
  2. Come in for the free consult. Noon to 10PM, any day. You talk through size, placement, and reference photos, and leave with a firm price.
  3. Put down the deposit. It locks your date with that artist and comes off the final cost. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  4. Sit for the work. Single pieces are often one session. Sleeves and chest work get split into linework and shading passes with healing time between.

Questions people ask about our realism artists

Who is the realism tattoo artist at Tagz Tattoo Shop in Mesa?
AG, the owner, leads the realism work and specializes in high-contrast black and grey sleeves and chest pieces. Tanner works the same style, Carlos is apprenticing in it, and Spence handles portraits. You can request any of them by name.
Can I choose which artist does my tattoo in Mesa?
Yes. Name the artist when you call, text, or walk in and the front desk books you with them. Walk-ins without a preference get the first open chair. If your piece fits one artist's lane better, the consult will say so honestly.
How much does a realism tattoo cost in Mesa, AZ?
The shop minimum is $150 and hourly work starts at $125. Full days run $600 to $1,500 depending on the artist, half sleeves $2,000 to $2,800, and a full back piece is $4,000. The free consult ends with an exact quote for your piece.
Do Tagz artists do color realism or only black and grey?
Black and grey is the house realism style, and it is what AG, Tanner, and Carlos are known for. The shop does color work too, in other styles, which lives on the color tattoos page. If you want a color piece, the consult sorts out who takes it.
Where can I see healed realism work from a Mesa artist?
AG posts healed pieces on TikTok and YouTube at @agtattoos and on Instagram at @agtattoos495. The black and grey realism page carries client galleries from AG, Tanner, and Carlos, all done in the shop.

Couldn’t say enough good things about this shop. From the environment to the artist, this shop is great. My artist was Eddy and he gave me a tattoo I’ve been waiting to get cause I needed the right person and the right Shop to do it since this piece was very important to me. It came out perfect. Couldn’t ask for a better experience.

★★★★★
Best tattoo shop in AZ ! The quality, style and art work is immaculate! I had the pleasure of meeting AG (owner) and his style of work is magnificent. All the artist in shop have their own style so if you looking for talent, go to TAGZ TATTOO. I also noticed AG has a barbershop on the opposite side of the building and the haircuts are very professional and stylish. I would say this tattoo/Barbershop is A1! I highly recommend getting a tattoo from AG or any of the artists in house. Be a part of the family and join AGs movements.
