Tagz Tattoo in Mesa

We are at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, right in the working stretch of East Main. This is the lived-in part of Mesa, not the polished malls out by the freeway. Zur Kate and the Wild Berry Diner are down the road, Superstition Ranch Market sits at 4755 E Main, and the salons, smoke shops and laundromats all share this corridor.

Main Street has a tattoo history too. Immaculate is out west, Sea of Ink is further east, and Tagz sits in the middle. The Valley Metro light rail runs straight down Main, so downtown, the Temple and the Mesa Arts Center are a short ride one way, and Red Mountain and the Superstitions frame the drive the other way.

East Valley is car country, so most people drive in. Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe and Apache Junction are all a quick shot on the US-60 or the Loop 202. Door faces Main, parking is easy.

AG built Tagz

AG owns the shop. He started it and put the team together. His lane is black and grey realism and that is what most people walk in for.

He posts the work on TikTok and YouTube, @agtattoos, healed and fresh both. The healed shots are the ones to study, because that is what a tattoo actually looks like after it settles, not the day it comes off the needle. Watch a few before you book and you will know if his hand is the one you want.

Tattoo and a fresh cut, same visit

There is a barber in the same building. Get your piece done, get lined up, walk out the door in one trip. That is the one stop shop line you will see in the reviews, and it is a real thing here, not a slogan.

It also helps on a long day. You are already sitting, you might as well leave looking sharp.

The Big Room

It is a big space with several rooms. One of them we call The Big Room. That matters for the long sittings.

A full back or a sleeve is a few hours in the chair, and nobody wants to spend that crammed in a corner next to the front door. There is room to lay out, room for the artist to move around the piece, and space for a private event if you book the shop for one.

The roster

The lineup changes month to month. AG is the one who is always here. Over the last while you will have seen Eddy, Cam, Alex, Steve, Priscilla, Tanner, Carlos and Presley through the chairs.

Because it rotates, the smart move is to call and see who is booking, especially if you want a specific style. Black and grey realism is the core of the shop.

There is color, fine line and traditional in the building too. Single-needle fine line up to a full sleeve, none of it is out of range.

The range of work

Small and clean or big and heavy, both get done here. Fine line script and little single-needle pieces on one side, full sleeves, chest plates, back pieces and leg work on the other. We do cover-ups, and those take more talking up front.

New art has to sit over old ink, so where it lands and how big it goes gets decided before the machine turns on. First-timers are welcome. Nobody makes it weird if this is your first one.

What this room is built for

Worth being straight about what this room is built for. AG built Tagz around high-contrast black and grey, and that is the deep end here. A realism sleeve, a cover-up, a memorial face, that work lands in the shop's own language. Fine line, color, bold traditional, all of that lives here too, but on a roster that moves month to month, so call and ask who is booking before you drive over. And if what you want is the old tattoo gone rather than covered, we will point you at laser somewhere else, because we do not do laser in this building. Working out which of those you are is most of what a consult is for.

How a big piece actually goes

  1. Free consult. Sit with the artist who would do the work, not a front desk. Bring references or just the idea, and talk size, placement, and style.
  2. Stencil. The artist draws it up and pulls a stencil. You check the flow in the mirror and move it until it sits right, before anything goes in.
  3. Linework. The first session maps the outline so the piece reads as one thing instead of a stack of separate tattoos crowded together.
  4. Shading and saturation. Later sittings build the depth in passes, with healing time between, so the skin takes each pass clean.
  • Free consultationSit with the artist who would do the work. You pay nothing at the consultation.
  • Same-day walk-insWhen a chair is open, walk in off East Main and get started that day.
  • Get Tatted NOW, Pay LATERFinancing on bigger work. It is a soft pull, so it does not touch your credit score.

The reason it is split up is simple. Skin only takes so much in one go. Push past that and it heals rough, and ink drops out where it was overworked.

So the piece gets built in layers, each one given time to settle before the next. What you keep looks different from the fresh, swollen version you walk out with, so we judge the work once it has healed.

Where it lands changes how the day feels. Over bone and thin skin runs sharper. Ribs, inner arm, the elbow ditch, the hands, the back of the knee, those all bite more.

Fleshier spots sit easier. None of it is unbearable, and most people tell us the same thing, that the nerves fell off once they were in the chair and the machine started. The room is clean and the crew is professional, and that goes a long way once you sit down.

Aftercare in a Mesa summer

Basic aftercare is basic, but the desert adds a wrinkle. Mesa summers run past 110, and a fresh tattoo does not want direct sun or a pool while it is healing.

Keep it covered outside, stay out of the water until it has closed up, and do not bake it at Usery Mountain or a Cubs game the week after you get it. Your artist will walk you through the rest before you leave.

Picking your artist

Start with AG's pages, @agtattoos, to see the black and grey realism. If you want color or fine line or traditional, call the shop and ask who is booking that style this month, since the roster moves. Match the artist to the work.

A traditional bold-line piece and a soft grey portrait are different skills, and the right hand for one is not always the right hand for the other. When in doubt, come in for a free consult and we will point you at the person who fits.

Price and financing

Price depends on the piece and who does it, so call for a real number. Consults do not cost anything, so you hear the figure before you are on the hook. A deposit holds your appointment and comes off the total.

For the bigger work we run Get Tatted NOW, Pay LATER. It is a soft credit pull, so it will not ding your score, and you can pay monthly or every couple of weeks. Once you are approved, no deposit.

Bring the idea, get a real number

Consults are free, so you hear the figure and the plan before you are on the hook for anything. Same-day walk-ins when a chair is open.

Mesa tattoo shop FAQ

What a first consult here tends to produce

Corey came in for his first tattoo and left with a piece drawn around his own idea. He wrote that AG was able to "bring my vision to life and made the whole design flow together seamlessly" (Corey S., Google review).

Do you do piercings?
No. Tagz is a tattoo-only studio, so we don't do piercings of any kind. For piercings you'll want a dedicated piercing studio.
Do I have to be 18 to get tattooed at Tagz?
Yes. You must be 18 or older with a valid photo ID. We don't tattoo anyone under 18, even with a parent's consent.
Do you take walk-ins at the Mesa tattoo shop?
Yes, same-day when a chair is open. For a cover-up or a custom idea it is worth coming in for the free consult first so we can talk placement, but if you want something simple and a chair is free, walk in.
Is there really a barber in the Mesa shop?
There is. Same building, same visit. Tattoo and a fresh cut in one trip. That is the one stop shop part.
How many sessions will a sleeve take in Mesa, AZ?
Depends on the size and detail, but plan on more than one. Linework first, then shading and saturation passes with healing time between them. Your artist gives you the real count at the consult once they see what you want.
Which placements hurt the most at our Mesa shop?
Some spots more than others. Ribs, inner arm, elbow ditch, hands and the back of the knee run sharp because the skin is thin and the bone is close. Fleshier areas are easier. Most people settle down fast once they are in the chair.
Can I finance a big tattoo in Mesa, AZ?
Yes. Get Tatted NOW, Pay LATER is a soft pull that will not hit your credit, and you pay it off monthly or biweekly. Approved means no deposit.
What are the shop's hours in Mesa?
Sunday noon to 6, Monday through Thursday noon to 8, and Friday and Saturday noon to 10.

Couldn’t say enough good things about this shop. From the environment to the artist, this shop is great. My artist was Eddy and he gave me a tattoo I’ve been waiting to get cause I needed the right person and the right Shop to do it since this piece was very important to me. It came out perfect. Couldn’t ask for a better experience.

Best tattoo shop in AZ ! The quality, style and art work is immaculate! I had the pleasure of meeting AG (owner) and his style of work is magnificent. All the artist in shop have their own style so if you looking for talent, go to TAGZ TATTOO. I also noticed AG has a barbershop on the opposite side of the building and the haircuts are very professional and stylish. I would say this tattoo/Barbershop is A1! I highly recommend getting a tattoo from AG or any of the artists in house. Be a part of the family and join AGs movements.

Finding the shop in Mesa, and what we work with

Tagz Tattoo Shop is at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, Mesa, AZ 85213, in Maricopa County, on the East Main corridor between Lindsay Road and Val Vista Drive.

  • Aftercare we actually stock. Mad Rabbit foam wash, glide, soothing gel and patches are sold at the front counter, so you can walk out with the same aftercare your artist tells you to use.
  • Shop Pay. The Get Tatted Now, Pay Later plans run on Shop Pay at checkout, which is why the payment split happens on the product page rather than through a separate lender in the shop.
  • Arizona age law. A.R.S. §13-3721 is the statute that governs tattooing anyone under eighteen in this state. Tagz goes further than the statute does: eighteen and over with a valid photo ID, no exceptions.
  • Valley Metro. Route and station times for the Main Street line are on the Valley Metro maps and schedules page if you are planning the trip in from Tempe or west Mesa.
