A cover-up tattoo is not the same job as a fresh one, and anybody who tells you it is has not done many. You are working over ink that is already in the skin, and heavy black and grey is the tool that actually buries it. That is exactly where Tagz Tattoo in Mesa is strong.

The shop runs on high-contrast black and grey, and heavy black and grey is what covers old ink. If you have a name you regret, a faded piece from years ago, or a tattoo that just came out rough, this is the work to bring in. Large cover-ups start around $1,400, and the real number depends on what we are covering. We are at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, on the East Main corridor near the light rail, a few minutes east of the Mesa Temple, and people come in from Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, and Apache Junction to get old work put behind them.

Why black and grey covers better than most styles
Covering a tattoo comes down to one hard fact. You cannot erase ink with more ink, you can only put something darker and denser on top of it, so the new design has to be at least as dark as the old one in the spots where they overlap. Heavy black and grey gives an artist the darkest, densest tools to work with, which is why a shop built around it has a real edge on cover-ups. Old ink also shows through lighter work, so a delicate fine-line piece or a soft color design will not hide a bold black tribal band underneath, no matter how pretty it is on paper. The way this actually works is the artist uses the old tattoo as part of the map, hiding the dark lines of the original inside the shadows of the new piece so your eye never lands on them. Done right, you stop seeing the old tattoo at all.
What covers easy, and what needs a step first
Covers clean
Easier- Light or faded older tattoos
- Thin linework with not much ink left
- Small pieces you are happy to size up
- Anything already grey or low-contrast
Needs groundwork
Harder- Fresh, solid black pieces
- Dark tribal and heavy lettering
- Ink so dense it may need laser lightening first
- Work you want hidden under something small
We do not do laser here, but the artist will tell you straight at the consult whether your piece covers as-is or whether a few laser sessions somewhere else would make the cover-up land far better. Nobody is going to talk you into a cover that will not hold up just to book the chair.
How a cover-up works
- Free consult, in person. An artist has to see the actual tattoo. A photo does not show how dark the ink really sits or how the skin took it.
- Design around the old ink. The new piece is built to use the old tattoo as part of the map, hiding its dark lines inside the shadows of the new design.
- Size up. A cover-up almost always runs larger than the tattoo it is hiding. You give up a little size to walk away with something you are proud of.
- Sessions with healing between. Packing dense black over existing ink is a lot for skin in one day, so a big cover-up gets split across sittings.
What to bring to your consult
- The tattoo itselfCome in so an artist can see the old ink in person, not just a photo of it.
- Reference for the coverAny images of what you would like over it, so the artist can steer the design.
- An open mind on sizeA cover almost always has to run bigger than the piece it hides. That is the trade.
- Payment and IDCard or cash, plus a valid photo ID showing you are 18 or older.
- Patience for laser, maybeIf the old ink is very dark, a few laser sessions elsewhere first can make the cover far better.
- Your history with itHow old the tattoo is and how it was done helps the artist judge how it will cover.
Bring the tattoo you want gone
Consults are free, so come in and let an artist look at the old ink before you commit to anything. If you have been hiding a tattoo for years, the fix starts with one conversation.

A cover-up can take more than one sitting, especially a big one, because packing dense black over existing ink is a lot for the skin to take in a day. Push it too far in one go and the ink drops out of the overworked spots and you are back for touch-ups. So a large cover-up gets broken into sittings with healing time between, same as any big piece. What matters is how it looks healed, not fresh, and a good artist plans the darks knowing the work will settle over the two or three weeks after. This is Mesa, so keep new work out of the sun while it heals, stay out of the pool and off the lake until it closes up, and follow the aftercare you are given. Summers here run past 110, and fresh ink and desert sun do not mix.
What a cover-up runs
Price depends on the old tattoo, its size, how dark it is, and what you want over it, so the honest answer is that you get a real number at the consult once an artist sees it. Large cover-ups start around $1,400 and go up from there with size and complexity. A deposit holds your appointment and comes off the total, it is not an extra charge. For the bigger cover-ups we run Get Tatted NOW, Pay LATER, a soft credit pull that does not touch your score to check, paid monthly or every couple of weeks, and approved means no deposit up front.
