We are at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, right on East Main, just under a mile east of where the light rail ends at Gilbert Road. This is the working stretch of Main, the lived-in one. Superstition Ranch Market is up the road at 4755 E Main, Wild Berry Diner and Zur Kate are close by, and the malls out east near US-60 are a whole other errand.

East Valley is car country. People drive in from Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe and Apache Junction because parking is easy and the door faces Main.

AG owns Tagz. He started it and put the team together. His lane is black and grey realism, and that is what most people come here for.

Why the grey wash is the whole thing

With black and grey realism the tone is everything. There is no color to hide behind.

So the whole read hangs on how the greys sit next to each other, from black holding down the darkest points to soft grey wash carrying the mid-tones and the skin left open for the highlights. A portrait, an animal, a pair of hands, a rose with real depth, and every one of those pieces lives or dies on that range from black to bare skin.

AG works it in passes. Saturation goes in where the piece needs weight, and the light areas stay quiet so the eye lands where it should.

Rush a black and grey piece and it shows. Push too much grey into swollen skin in one go and it heals patchy, the wash goes blotchy, the soft transitions drop out. The honest version comes from letting the skin settle between passes and reading it healed, not fresh.

Where a realism piece lives is a long-haul call

That range from black to bare skin is also why we talk placement harder on realism than on anything else we do. Sun is rough on grey wash, and the mid-tones are what a realistic piece hangs on. Thin those out and you are left holding the anchor darks and a picture that has gone flat. On a body that lives outdoors in Arizona, that argues for putting a serious realism piece somewhere with a quieter life: an inner arm, a bicep, a back, a thigh. It does not mean you cannot run realism down an outer forearm. It means we would rather say it out loud at the consult than have you work it out years later.

How a big piece actually goes

1. Free consult. Sit with the artist who would do the work, not a front desk. Bring references or just the idea, and talk size, placement, and style.
2. Stencil. The artist draws it up and pulls a stencil. You check the flow in the mirror and move it until it sits right, before anything goes in.
3. Linework. The first session maps the outline so the piece reads as one thing instead of a stack of separate tattoos crowded together.
4. Shading and saturation. Later sittings build the depth in passes, with healing time between, so the skin takes each pass clean.

We split it into sittings because that is what the skin needs, not to pad the bill. It only takes so much in a session before it stops taking ink clean and starts to swell and bleed the grey. When that happens the artist is fighting the skin, and you feel it more too.

Space the sessions out and each pass lands crisp. The last time you look at a piece should be weeks after the needle, healed, and that is the version we want you judging us on.

Placement and what it feels like

Some spots bite harder than others. Over bone and thin skin runs sharper. The ribs, the inner arm, the elbow ditch, hands and the back of the knee are where you feel it most.

Somewhere with more give under it, the outer arm, thigh and calf, sits easier and holds a long session better. If it is your first tattoo, say so, and the artist will steer placement and session length around that.

Most people tell us the nerves drop off once they are in the chair and the outline is going. We take first-timers and we take full sleeves, single-needle work and full backs, all under the same roof.

Aftercare in a Mesa summer

Fresh ink and Arizona sun do not mix. Summers here run past 110, so keep a new piece out of direct sun and out of the pool while it settles. Sun on a healing tattoo fades the grey wash and can blister it, and pool chemicals sit in an open wound.

The shop and the lineup

It is a big space, several rooms, and one we call The Big Room, so a long sitting is not crammed into a corner. There is a barber in the same building too. Plenty of folks get a piece and a fresh cut on the same visit, and that is the line that keeps showing up in our reviews.

The lineup rotates month to month. AG is the constant. Names you may see in the chairs include Eddy, Cam, Alex, Steve, Priscilla, Tanner, Carlos and Presley.

Black and grey realism is the core. If you want color, or fine line, or old-school traditional, someone in the building does it.

Price depends on the piece and who does it, so call and ask for a real number. Consults do not cost anything. A deposit holds the appointment and comes off what you owe.

Once you are approved there is no deposit. Same-day walk-ins when a chair is open, and we do private events.
