The sizing and placement talk, honestly

The consult is where you get told the truth about your idea, and a good shop treats that as the whole point. Fine-line script that looks clean on a phone screen turns to mush at two inches wide on a wrist. Ink spreads slightly in skin over the years and lettering needs air between strokes to stay readable at year five.

Ribs and inner bicep hurt more and swell more than forearm or calf, which matters if you're planning a long first session. High-motion spots like fingers and the side of the hand shed ink and rarely heal crisp.

None of this is meant to talk you out of a tattoo. It's meant to get you the version of your idea that still looks right a decade out. Sometimes that means going bigger than you planned.

Sometimes it means moving from wrist to forearm. The artist will hold sized printouts of the design against the spot so you can see the options on your own body instead of guessing.

Deposits come after you decide, not before

You pay nothing at the consultation. Nothing to book it, nothing to sit through it, nothing if you leave and think it over for a month.

A deposit only enters the picture when you choose to book the appointment. It's non-refundable, it holds your spot on the artist's calendar, and it gets applied directly to the final cost of the tattoo. It comes off the total rather than sitting on top of it. The artist quotes your price in person or by phone once size, placement, and detail are settled, because two tattoos of the same subject can be wildly different amounts of work. Call the shop at (480) 670-1037 with the details of your piece and you'll get a real number.

Cover-up and sleeve consults

These two are where a free consult earns its keep, and they run longer than a standard one.

For a cover-up, the artist has to read the old piece in person. How dense the black is, whether the lines have blown out, whether any of it sits raised on the skin, how much it has faded. Tattoo ink only goes darker, never lighter, so the old tattoo sets hard limits on what the new design can be.

A faded grey outline gives the artist a lot of room. A saturated black tribal band gives almost none, and the honest answer is sometimes a few laser fading sessions before the cover-up will work.

You'll hear that at the consult rather than after a deposit. The old work also needs to be fully healed and settled before anyone tattoos over it.

Sleeve planning is a mapping session. The artist looks at how the design travels around the arm, where the focal images should sit so they're visible when your arm hangs naturally.

The artist also checks how the composition handles the elbow ditch and inner bicep, where skin folds and stretches and fine detail tends to suffer. You'll leave with a session plan, since a full sleeve is a multi-sitting project.

One Mesa-specific note that comes up in almost every summer consult: fresh ink and Arizona sun are a bad mix. A healing tattoo can't be in the pool and shouldn't be in direct sun, so if you're planning a big piece around a July lake trip, the consult is where you sort the timing out.

Why the consult is free

Charging for consultations pushes a shop toward saying yes to everything, because the meter is already running. Keeping it free means the artist can tell you your lettering needs to be bigger, or your cover-up needs laser first, or your idea belongs on your back instead of your wrist. Nothing rides on the answer.

Pieces earn their reviews because they were planned right before the needle ever moved. The consult is the planning. Giving it away is how the good work keeps showing up.

Getting to the shop

We are at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9, Mesa, AZ 85213, in the strip center at the corner of Main Street and Lindsay Road, a lighted intersection that's easy to spot from either direction. The door faces Main and parking is easy. If you're coming without a car, the Valley Metro light rail gets you most of the way.

The line ends at the Gilbert Road and Main Street station, a little under a mile west of the shop. So the last stretch is a short rideshare hop or a straight walk east on Main.

From Gilbert, Chandler, or Tempe, take US-60 or the Loop 202 and you're at the door in twenty minutes or so. From Apache Junction it's a straight shot down Main.

There's also a barber in the same building. People book a consult, get lined up next door, and handle both in one trip.
