How a Custom Tattoo Design Works, From Idea to Finished Art
Share
A custom tattoo is one drawn for you and only you, instead of picked off a wall of flash; the design starts as your idea and gets built from scratch around your body, your story, and the spot you want it.
Here is how a custom piece actually comes together at our Mesa shop, and if you want the full picture the custom tattoos page and a free consultation are the next step.

It starts with a conversation, not a needle
When you come in for a free consultation, we are trying to understand what you are picturing, because the more we know, the closer the drawing lands to what you actually want.
We will ask about size, placement, style, and your call on black and grey versus color, and we will be honest early if something you want will not sit well where you want it.

The artist draws it up
After the consult, the artist takes what you talked about and creates the design. This is the part that separates custom work from flash, and it is why custom takes longer to book. Somebody is sitting down and drawing your piece by hand, not printing a stencil that a hundred other people already wear.
Depending on the size and the artist's schedule, the drawing might be ready in a few days or take a couple of weeks, and bigger, detailed work like a realism portrait or a full sleeve build needs more drawing time. When the design is done, you get to see it before anything is permanent, and you can ask for changes: the flowers bigger, the lettering moved, one element dropped entirely.
Booking, deposits, and how the day works
Once you are happy with the design, we lock in your appointment, because your artist needs to block the right amount of time and prep your specific stencil, so this is not usually a walk-in-and-go situation for anything large.
To hold the slot we take a deposit, and that deposit is not an extra fee; it is non-refundable, and it comes straight off the final cost of your tattoo. It does two things: it reserves the artist's time and it covers the hours they already spent drawing your custom design. If a bigger piece stretches the budget, we offer financing.

On the day, eat a real meal beforehand, wear clothes that give easy access to the spot, and give yourself more time than you think you need. Large custom pieces often run across more than one session.
Why custom is worth the extra steps
A custom tattoo fits your body's shape, and no stranger at the gym has the exact same one.
Custom is also the honest answer for anything meaningful: a memorial piece, a portrait, a design that ties several ideas together, a cover-up that has to work around old ink.

Planning a custom tattoo in the East Valley
We are at 2735 E Main St, Suite 9 in Mesa, on East Main at Lindsay Road, open every day: noon to 6 on Sundays, noon to 8 Monday through Thursday, and noon to 10 on Fridays and Saturdays. A lot of our custom clients come in from around the East Valley, from Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, and Scottsdale, and a fair number make the drive because the artist's style matched the piece they had in mind.
If you are early in the process and not sure what you want yet, that is normal.
Have an idea? Let's design it.
Start with a free consultation and see what a piece built just for you can look like. We will take it from a thought in your head to art you will wear for good.
